At the start of the crisis, President Carter did not want to get involved until it became a popular issue that was often talked about by the press and news. When the United States peacefully asked the Iranians to release the hostages, Ayatollah Khomeini refused and kept them for a long time. They simply refused to negotiate until they got what they wanted.

Pictures from the Crisis
During WWII Iran was invaded by the Soviet Union and the United Kingdom, this was a problem because the United States was allied to both of these countries during WWII. Thankfully this didn't cause much problems because of the war going on, but what threw U.S Iran tensions away was the Iranian Revolution in 1979. The Iranian students were outraged because the shah was safe in America receiving medical treatment instead of paying for his crimes in Iran, This made the Shah seem like he was purposely fleeing the country instead of helping his people. The world changed as a result of the Iranian hostage Crisis due to the economic and political tensions that were eventually caused between the U.S and Iran.
The Militant students were outraged because the US government allowed the Shah of Iran to go to New York to get medical treatment for cancer. They wanted the Shah to pay for his crimes. The students took over the US embassy in Tehran. They held many Americans hostage. The CIA managed to rescue some hostages but during an operation some Americans were killed.
The Iranian Hostage crisis stands as one of the most embarrasing times for the United States as a nation. Where it was left publically humiliated and internally conflicted. It affected political standings during the time and brought out American fears of Iranian people.
